Sorry, but I'm not quite following here.

Will the use of HTTPS (in addition to unsecured HTTP) not merely mean we 
enable HTTPS on the server & accept 1:1 traffic on both port 80 & 443 
for the same IP?

It's probably not the end of the world right now, but it something to 
consider if we're going to be passing login/authentication credentials 
around
