Suggestion: Blender is not great for CAD work.

I find http://artofillusion.org with the STL plugin to be superior.

Failing that, I can recommend OpenSCAD. It is parametric, so you
basically type in a script describing the shapes and watch the results
in near real time. You can still use the mouse to zoom around though.

Um, I suppose we ought to start considering a 3D Printer
Install/Build-Fest ?
