well, depends what you mean by damned:
either you go with the system, or you go against it. if you go against it
and you're insignificant, you will get away with it but not make any real
change. if you're significant enough to be noticed and you lose, your toys
get taken off you and used to strengthen the system. if you win...well,
you're rather unique
