Tempered safety glass is cut/beveled/shaped before it is tempered. After it
is tempered it shatters if you try to cut/bevel/shape it.

I saw a pane shatter once. It was part of a pool fence. With no stimulus
whatsoever, it dissolved into tiny pieces which shot up into the air in a
column about five meters high, hung briefly in the air, then all came down at
once like glass rain. Spectacular.

Turned out that the supplier had forgotten to bevel the edge and did it after
it was tempered. Gentle warming by sunlight set it off.
